Best Place to Stay In London With a Family?

Ad: We review the No.1 The Mansions By Mansley, a luxury serviced apartment on Earl’s Court Road. We stayed in July 2019.

Searching for a great place to stay in London with a family? We were asked to review a luxury serviced apartment in No.1 The Mansion By Mansley in South Kensington. With a central location, three bedrooms and bathrooms and a garden, this was already looking like it would tick a lot of the boxes when looking for the best place to stay in London with a family. Read on to find out what the kids thought about the stay as well as some of our hits and misses.

Full disclosure: We weren’t paid to produce this review but our stay was complimentary.

So I’ve got to be honest, when we’re looking for accommodation, we usually go straight to Air BnB. We just love to have space when we’re staying away with the kids. The use of the kitchen is a must have for us as we try to save money by having picnics. As parents of small children sometimes its a lot easier to have dinner at home. We hadn’t really thought of the option of serviced apartments until we were asked to review this one. So how does it compare and could it be the best place to stay in London with a family?

The Location

Only a few minutes walk from Earl’s Court

With so many attractions on offer around London, it’s sometimes hard to the right location. No 1 The Mansions is just down the road from Earl’s court station ( less than a five minute walk with the kids). Earls’ court is on the district line. In only a few stops, takes you to to all the attractions you’ll need to fill your weekend. Our itinerary was pretty packed, visiting the Borough Market, the South bank, Tate modern, Big Ben, the National History Museum and the London Science Museum (which you can walk to in 15/20 mins). If you want to find more about what we got up to then check back on the website as we’ll be writing about that next.

The accommodation is on Earl’s Court high street. You’ve got a number of small shops and restaurants on your doorstep. A Tesco Extra is only a 15 minute drive away if you want to have a bigger shop (or get a shop delivered for your arrival).

The Space

If I told you the kids wanted to move in, it might give you an indication of how lovely and spacious the apartment is. Most of the rooms are accessed by the large entrance hall when entering the apartment.

The Bedrooms

There is a large double room with a king size bed and en suite with shower, double sinks and a toilet.

Next to that you’ll find a compact single room and next to that, a well sized twin bedroom. All rooms come with plenty of storage for clothes. The beds are really comfortable and the curtains are heavy, keeping the light out for the kids. As the beds are quite tall, we pushed the twin beds together and against the wall so they were able to sleep safely.

The Bathrooms

Aside from the en-suite, there is a family bathroom with bath (which after a long day sightseeing was a much welcome treat for the kids). Then there is a separate WC next door, making three toilets in total. They were all immaculately clean. The shower powerful and the bath big enough to scrub down both kids.

The Living space

Light, open and comfortable, the kitchen diner is spacious enough to act as a home from home. The kids soon nestled onto the sofa tuning into CBeebies whilst we unpacked. They’d kindly provided a manual, giving details of all the need to know information including their DVD rental service. Which in addition to a Netflix account on the smart TV means you’ll never be short of something to watch. I love a manual, I find it’s quite a basic thing for accoodation providers to supply but its so useful. The Mansions had gone one step over and above the manual though, they had provided a smart phone that you could take out and about with you. On the phone, they had downloaded useful apps to help guide you about London. You also could use the phone as much as you like to make phone calls nationally and internationally.

The Kitchen

As we’d arrived late evening, we’d brought some supplies with us and soon set to test out the kitchen. They’d nicely provided a welcome basket with bread, biscuits, cereals, teas, coffee and hot chocolate. There was also milk, orange juice and apple juice in the fridge. We found the kitchen to be fully stocked with utensils, pots and pans and crockery all present. That meant no annoying instances of trying to make grated cheese without a cheese grater and the like. It also has a dishwasher, I mean who wants to be doing the washing up on holiday?

Just behind the kitchen is a utility room which houses the washing machine, tumble dryer, further storage and the ironing board. For longer stays, its great to have these facilities as it means you can travel lighter. For us, it was just somewhere we could keep the luggage out of sight and keep the room nice and tidy.

The Garden

As we were staying in the Garden apartment, we had sole access to the garden. It was lovely to enjoy a glass of wine and make the most of the light summer evenings whilst the kids were asleep. It felt lavish to have this in such a central location.

What Services Are Offered?

Once checked in, we had the friendliest welcome. The receptionist gave us a full tour of the apartment and told us that she was contactable 24 hours a day over the weekend. If we wanted it, we could have had our laundry and dry cleaning arranged. They also purchase provisions, book tickets and make reservations. We had a bit of a chat about our itinerary and she was able to make some recommendations about transport. Ticking a few boxes of the best places to stay in London with a family?

Getting there and away

Being that you’re in central London, the transport options are many. We were coming from Cardiff.

  • Bus: Cardiff Central to London Victoria (3hr 45) then the tube from Victoria to Earl’s Court and walked the few minutes to the apartment.
  • Train: Cardiff Central to Paddington ( 2 hrs) then the district line to Earl’s Court and walk.
  • Drive: The apartment does not come with parking, but this was the cheapest and quickest option and didn’t limit us to times. Parking around the back of the apartment was free after 6pm and was free on Sundays. This meant we could park, drop off the luggage and then move the car to a longer term parking option. Again when it was time to leave, we could park for free on the street. We chose to use Yourparkingspace.com to find a local parking space that we could leave the car over the weekend and not worry about moving the car. We ended up paying £24 to park in the Tesco Extra 15 minutes away, which for London was very reasonable for the whole weekend.

Our Verdict

If you compare the price of similar size and quality of accommodation in the same location on Air BnB, this actually comes out cheaper. You get the added bonus of the garden and the 24 hour service. This has probably been one of my favourite city holiday accommodations and could well be the best place to stay in London with a family.

We loved our stay

What we loved:

  • The Space: This place is so roomy for two adults and two children.
  • The Location: We had shops, restaurants and the district line practically on our doorstep
  • The Extras: From the welcome basket, the nespresso machine, dishwasher, manual, free smartphone and 24 hour service, it made it feel like a luxury stay.
  • The Quality: The Decor of the building, the comfortable beds and interior design made it a home from home.

What could have been improved

I’m honestly scraping the barrel when it comes to improvements, but I want to ensure I give an honest view. These were so small in comparison to what we loved.

  • The Wifi was at times a little slower than I’d expect. Having given this feedback, ByMansley wanted to state that they have fitted a new WiFi point to the Garden Apartment. It has been tested with great results.
  • The reception for check-in is not 24 hours. It was not completely obvious how to gain entry when we arrived. (Although after pressing the porter button on the intercom, we were welcomed and after a short wait were shown around)
  • The windows are double glazed but you can hear a little street noise from the bedrooms at night. I imagine this is fairly common with most city centre accommodations.
