The Perfect Group Family Break in Devon?

The Perfect Group Family Break in Devon?

We had a challenge when we set about trying to organise a weekend away for my Dad’s 60th birthday. There were seventeen people to try and accommodate. Seven of those being children, ages ranging from eleven to a few weeks old. Could we find the perfect group family break ? Would we find somewhere to fit us all under one roof? Could we survive being in the same house for that long and still leave with our sanity in tact?

We started searching on all the usual favourites. Air BnB, Owners Direct etc. and eventually came up with Ashcombe cottages . An estate of ten self-catered holiday cottages set in a valley between the South Devon Coastline and Dartmoor. Due to the number of cottages, there are loads of accommodation options. We chose to stay in the Rainbow Cottage, which overlooks the farm courtyard and had a spacious 7 bedrooms. It had plenty of room for us all to sit down for dinner and loads of room for us to relax.

What’s so good about the cottage?

The great thing about the cottages, is that they have a communal heated pool, sauna, kids playroom (indoor), kids play park (outdoor) BBQ area and gorgeous views out of every window.

What is there to do?

Even though you felt like you were on a rural retreat, you were only 15-20 minutes away from a number of great things to do with the kids. We paid a visit to Haldon Forest – see our post here about the great Highway Rat trail they have on at the moment.

No trip to Devon would be complete without a visit to the seaside. Even if it was January and a rainy weekend. Dawlish Warren was one of the nearest beaches so we took a stroll. The kids enjoyed jumping over the waves and we had a nice Roast dinner at the Boat House Tavern and Grill which had a fab kids play centre inside, giving us a little rest whilst they burnt off any excess energy.

Anything for the adults?

It wasn’t just the kids that had all the fun, the cottages have an Adventure centre just down the road. They have clay pigeon shooting, quad bike safaris, archery and paintball. Part of the group decided to do the clay pigeon shooting and had a great time whilst the kids took advantage of the swimming pool.

Would we recommend it?

Everyone had a great time, the accommodation was just perfect and we’ll definitely be back again soon. So if you’re planning a large family get together – I’d recommend you check this place out!
